Highline Headlines - June 5

The last day of school for K-12 will be Wednesday, June 17, which will be a three-hour day starting at the regular start time. Each school will communicate their release time. The last day of school for preschool will be Tuesday, June 16. 

Correction from last week’s headlines: Last week, we incorrectly listed Wednesday, June 10, as the last day for graduating seniors. The correct date is Thursday, June 11, with counselor approval. This will be a full school day.  

Time to start planning! Here is a look at the tentative 2026-27 school calendar. The calendar will be final after Highline Education Association (HEA) members vote on it in August. 

Highline staff presented the proposed 2026-27 budget to the School Board this week. The plan maintains stability while reducing costs by about $8 million, including previously shared central office cuts and 31.5 eliminated positions. Share your budget questions and input through a ThoughtExchange and attend the June 24 public hearing. 

Free summer meals will be available for all children and teens ages 18 and younger from June 29 through July 30. Youth do not need to be enrolled in Highline Public Schools to participate, and no registration is required. Meal dates and times vary by site. Highline is preparing students for the future they choose. One way we do this is by helping students build the digital skills and habits they may use in college, training programs and future careers. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, students will use Microsoft 365 tools more regularly for classwork. 

Families and students will see an update to the ParentVUE and StudentVUE mobile apps later this summer. The app will show a message asking you to install a new version with a link to download the updated app from your device’s app store. This message is safe. It is an official update from ParentVUE and StudentVUE. 

The community-led Capital Facilities Advisory Committee presented its 2026 bond recommendation to the Highline School Board on June 3. The recommended bond package focuses on aging schools, safety needs, building systems and long-term facilities planning.

Heading to graduation? Be sure to review ceremony details, including parking, arrival times and entry policies. Families can also learn how graduation photos will be delivered and find answers to common questions. 

We are helping students understand AI, use it responsibly and know when not to use it. With new staff guidance, student learning opportunities and summer training, Highline is preparing classrooms to use AI in ways that support learning, privacy, equity and student success.

The school year is almost over, but there’s still important learning happening in every classroom! These final weeks include review sessions, projects, and celebrations that help students wrap up the year feeling confident and prepared for what’s next. You are welcome to join the Highline School Board and superintendent at a school board meeting. All school board meetings are held at the Central Office, 15675 Ambaum Boulevard SW in Burien, typically every other Wednesday, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 18. All regular board business meetings, work sessions and public hearings are public, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
